thomas jeppe is an australian painter and sculptor with a background in publishing and cultural studies. jeppe's art explores new perspectives within the framework of existing cultural history. using traditional portraiture, abstraction and architectural sculpture, the artist avoids traditional theories and parameters. his work entitled asiatische adlernase is exemplary of his highly individual approach. it began with an interview conducted in 2010 with a german gallerist who had abandoned the art world in search of a new passion founded on objective reasoning, and which he surprisingly found in taiwanese tea.
the man's subsequent attempts to introduce the practice to germany were confounded by a broad range of cultural structures - primarily stemming from the clichéd east and west divide. informed by the themes of master knowledge, vernacular rituals, anti-globalism and the difficulties of cultural transposition, jeppe travelled to taiwan to conduct his own research on tea and its surrounding context. while berlin's 032c workshop hosts abstract journalism, a presentation of jeppe's works that explore the contradictions embedded in a research-based art practice, the comme des garçons black shop around the corner presents a related show with additional works.
dubbed abstract journalism - annexe, it features an installation with four large-scale paintings based on a lamp from the reading room of a 19th-century mansion in taipei. the series cannot be readily classified as it presents a combination of false geometry and unidentifiable fruits and vessels, and they become an analogy for cultural incommensurability. a recreation of jean-honoré fragonard's painting a philosopher oversees the analogy; an enlargement of a proto-impressionist anomaly of the rococo era, a stand-in for emphatically western tradition, knowledge and anachronism. together, these pictures are presented within a timber framing-style installation, making visible the ordinarily hidden frameworks of construction. location : brunnenstrasse 9 [mitte]. location : linienstrasse 115 [mitte].
