there's no stopping the voraciousness of china's discerning shoppers. the country's top-tier cities already boast an impressive array of luxury brands, but as the market starts to mature a new wave of sophisticated multi-brand stores is fast emerging. in beijing's popular shopping area of sanlitun a stylish concept store opened its doors that specifically caters to a demographic of young and in-the-know shoppers. called sanlipop, it's a collab effort of five friends who met while living in london, and who shared a vision to create an appealing contemporary space in china's capital where a tightly edited range of goods would be presented. the audacious five enlisted acclaimed osaka-based architecture practice ninkipen! to create a matching interior, and as a result the sanlipop premises boast a minimalist aesthetic, infused with raw elements such as concrete, wood and brass mixed with whimsical detailing.
the brick walls are dipped in white paint, while a bare ceiling and polished concrete flooring offer a beautiful contrast. the design has been conceived as such to allow the offerings to pop out. so what's on the shelves at sanlipop? catering to both a male and female shoppers, it carries cool mix of products and brands and includes apparel by maison kitsuné, band of outsiders, bwgh, jacquemus and opening ceremony, jewellery pieces by delfina delettrez and ek thongprasert, and accessories and lifestyle products by vlieger & van dam, (malin+goetz) and aedle. adding up to the happening vibe at sanlipop is an espresso bar which serves certified fair trade coffee. location: north building, 29 sanlitun bei lu, shop 1-103 [sanlitun].
