maison martin margiela makes another big splash in beijing, opening up a spectacular second flagship, and at the same time its largest store on the planet, at sanlitun village, the city's leading designer shopping grounds. the flagship measures a whopping 540 sqm., spread over two floors of a hypermodern steel and glass structure. the external modernity extends well into the store, featuring a crisp interior marked by clean lines, covered in the brand's iconic white and silver shades. the polished surfaces are eclectically matched with an exposed ceiling of raw cement that's adorned with striking hexagonal fluorescent lights. the store may be big but it's cleverly divided into many different cubes that each feature a different theme and decor, and contain maison martin margiela's different collections.
obviously, this adds up to the sense of a shopping adventure. also, each collection reflects a separate mood, with white curtains and carpet in the women's department, parquet-printed linoleum in the men’s department and real tiles for the mm6 label. the walls of the cubes, are printed with the well-known trompe-l'œil doors. further striking details are the neon lights on chains that hover over the staircase between the two floors, and we just love the fabulous curved metal slide that allows laden shoppers, happy with their newly purchased margiela trophies, a matching jolly exit. obviously a big opening party was held, in addition to a fashion show in front of the new store. both events pulled a slew of fashionistas and celebs, and even big boss renzo rosso flew in from italy for the festivities. location: sanlitun village, 11 sanlitun lu, building n2, shop 18-28 [sanlitun].
