political turmoil or not, shoppers in bangkok need to get their daily fix. well, so it seems. against the backdrop of ongoing skirmishes and a recent military coup, the thai capital's glitziest new mall has welcomed the first big spenders to the premises. called central embassy, it's part of a prestigous mixed-use complex designed by london-based practice amanda levete architects. the striking architecture pays homage to traditional thai temples and features an expansive façade constructed from shimmering shingles. the mall is an a-grade retail environment, and has a string of leading luxury brands among its new tenants. and it's right here where prada has opened its fourth bangkok boutique.
situated on the ground floor with direct access from bustling thanon ploenchit, the store features a striking façade of backlit aluminium blades with gold and steel finishes which produce an unusual effect both day and night. a tribute to french-colombian artist carlos cruz-diez, prada first introduced such a shiny façade in 2013 at the flagship store in osaka. the shop measures a sizeable 560 sqm. [6,028 sq.ft.] and features an interior by architect roberto baciocchi. the ground floor presents prada's women's collections. in a setting of black + white-chequered marble flooring and display cases finished with polished-steel trim, bags and accessories are presented. the adjacent room is clad entirely in black marble and showcases additional items.
the mood softens in the third room which is home to the ready-to-wear and shoe collections. the decor here comprises of walls covered in soft green fabric, beige carpeting, and green velvet sofas. a black marble staircase leads up to the first floor where the men's ready-to-wear, leather goods, accessories and footwear collections are presented. the design here morphs into a masculine yet opulent palette of ebony flooring and walls, complemented by leather sofas and palladium-plated metal fixtures and display counters with coloured, saffiano leather drawers. location: central embassy mall, 1031 thanon ploenchit, shop L1-17 [ploenchit].
