born in seoul, raised in france and currently residing in germany, florence lucas is an acclaimed artist whose cosmopolitan background seems to add a specific edge to her work. lucas started her carreer in 2004 as an illustrator and musician, designing many record album covers of various artists signed to french record label tigersgushi and has collaborated with an extensive range of leading fashion brands and magazines. always up for a new artistic challenge, lucas recently packed up her bags to take up a three-month residency at bangkok's toot yung gallery. the residency program is the first of its kind offered by a privately owned art venue in the thai capital and aims to expose selected artists in more ways than one and to hook them up with the city's creative community and art aficionados.
opening sat - aug 3 [7pm-late / rsvp here for access] at the gallery's new venue is it's all about love, a restrospective of sorts of lucas' works. it presents a sharply curated selection of the artist's personal art works created during the past two years, including original drawings, digigraphies, silk screens and a screening of her first stop motion film the face of another, made for french nu-disco duo bot'ox. lucas' work is inspired by a myriad of sources but mostly film stills. she has set up a visual library stocked with inspirational images, books and objects found online and offline. as for this show, you could say that toot yung art center will be more or less transformed into the artistic home of florence lucas. mind you, a special series of products derived from the artworks, such as t-shirts, stickers and cards, will be available at the gallery. location: 12/6 ekamai soi 2 [sukhumvit].
