william klein is one of the most influential photographers of our time. originally trained as a painter, klein moved on to photography and later film, and quickly made a name for himself in both photojournalism and fashion photography. although two distinct fields, klein approached them with a sense of irony and realism - quite a novelty at the time - that would become his trademark. currently on at amsterdam's foam museum is a retrospective which sheds light on a career that spans no less than six decades. the exhibition occupies all floors of the museum and presents a wide range of works, from raw urban photography taken during his travels to new york, rome, moscow and tokyo in the late 1950s and early 1960s, to his groundbreaking fashion shots for vogue magazine. as said, klein also made his mark on contemporary film and made movies, documentaries and over 250 commercials. a selection of these works will also be screened at the retrospective [on through mar 12]. location: keizersgracht 609 [centrum].
