amsterdam: weekday store opening

amsterdam currently sees a steady influx of international brands, spicing up the local retail landscape with new stores in the city's premier shopping areas. the very latest addition is a stellar store - or dare we say flagship? - by swedish brand weekday. occupying four spacious floors of a 19th-century townhouse, the store features an exemplary contemporary retail design by gonzalez haase, a berlin-based practice led by pierre jorge gonzalez and judith haase. the duo added a sophisticated inner layer of basic materials, captured in contemporary forms and constellations, to the building's historic shell. the innovation is both decorative and functional, and starts righ at the store's ornately stuccoed entrance which is spiced up by a sleek steel ceiling sculpture that is duplicated in the staircase and, more functionally, in clothes racks across the entire retail space. wood is a predominant element, used as flooring and, albeit in mdf, as shelves and displays in different sizes and shapes. the floors are decorated with modern graphic patterns in pitch black.

the furniture range is further enhanced with sizeable futuristic looking cashier's desks, constructed from an eclectic mix of mdf and mesh steel. the same approach has been given to construct the changing room cubicles. again made from mdf they're covered in a thick layer of foam on the outside while partially covered with smoked glass on the inside. another eye-catching element are the light fixtures, notably the organically grouped spotlights. a series of strategically positioned led flatscreens that show weekday collection footage, firmly anchor the decorum in the 21st century. the new weekday store carries the brand's entire men's and women's collections, in addition to higher end select items by forward designers such as christophe lemaire, rodebjerörjan andersson, ann-sophie back and cédric jacquemyn. an in-house print shop on the ground floor delivers tees with quirky weekday-style graphics. the building's expansive top floor serves as office space. location: rokin 84 [centrum].
