although most of amsterdam's attractions are clustered in the canal district, hotel not hotel rightfully lures visitors to one of the city's less trodden grounds. set up by tijmen receveur, bruno bont and dirk hoogerwerf, three young entrepreneurs who earned their spurs in the local hospitality scene, the hotel concept is slightly bonkers, but in a good way. hotel not hotel is located in de baarsjes, once a dodgy residential neighbourhood, but as of late remarkably on the way up with a number of happening new establishments. for many years, the area's cheap housing has attracted a considerable number of young creatives, and the launch of the new property is obviously seen as a very welcome addition.
the hotel is housed in a modern structure that originally was to be home to an oriental-style shopping bazaar, but when that plan fell through the aforementioned trio stepped in. instead of traditional rooms, the premises feature a myriad of highly imaginitive sleeping spaces, all set in a living room environment and designed in collab with eindhoven-based design collective collaboration o. a beautifully restored vintage amsterdam streetcar is situated on the ground floor, featuring a king-size bed and wooden flooring. directly opposite stands the crisis-free zone with its alluring façade of intricate woodcarving. this pod solemnly promises to be the only place on the planet where to escape the burdening daily drag of negative news and stagnant economies.
the crow's nest isn't about a good night's sleep only, but comes with a watch tower for additional acrobatism and a birdseye view of the lobby. up on the mezzanine floor comfy leather sofas sit in front of laden bookcases that aren't just bookcases. no sir, they're secret bookcases that shield perfectly hidden rooms. and the list of unusual pads goes on. while some of the rooms have a private bathroom, most hotel guests make use of sleek and modern communal facilities on the ground floor. adjacent to the lobby a funky bar is situated where to mingle with other guests and neighbourhood locals. the bar menu not only lists hot and cold drinks, but also tasty sandwiches, cakes, and other finger food. location: piri reisplein 34 [de baarsjes].
