it was in the mid-1980s that hyatt first considered opening a property in amsterdam. a waterside highrise had been designed by architect helmut jahn, an architect known for his rather bombastic style and emblematic for the era's zeitgeist. more than two decades on, the company has finally arrived in the dutch capital by way of its andaz design hotel brand. the new andaz amsterdam couldn't be any more different than hyatt's initial project, apart from the fact that it too has a waterside location, albeit a much better one. located smack in the middle of the scenic canal district, the hotel is housed in a 1970s structure that was previously occupied by city's public library and features 122 guestrooms and suites. as the andaz hotel brand is all about luxury hospitality matched with exceptional design, the andaz amsterdam is no exception. dutch industrial designer marcel wanders crafted a hotel interior with various bold references to dutch history and culture, and one which also playfully juxtaposes random elements from the aforementioned contexts. the hotel rooms vary in size and there are no less than 15 different room types to choose from, with the suites - varying from 55 sqm. [592 sq.ft.] to 141 sqm. [1,518 sq.ft.] - obviously being the most spacious. what all rooms have in common is an open structure that not only allows natural light to permeate the entire space, but also incorporates an open bathroom with shower and toilet compartments.

needless to say that wanders' frivolous signature style extends to all rooms, and that these are fully equipped to meet the requirements of today's savvy traveler, including complimentary wifi access. so, what are andaz amsterdam's other treats? located in the hotel lobby is the bluespoon lounge, a place where to mingle or sit back with a book from the adjacent library. the bluespoon restaurant, helmed by chef julien piguet, is a culinary oasis of sorts that serves sophisticated seasonal dishes according to a farm-to-table concept, making use of the very best of ingredients that are regionally sourced. the restaurant and bar feature a matching wanders-infused setting with views of a landscaped courtyard garden. the andaz studio is a versatile section of the property that consists of three stylish spaces that can be used fo a variety of events, be it meetings, product launches or private screenings. and should the city's hustle and bustle proves too much, andaz amsterdam aptly accommodates with a fully equipped fitness centre and an urban spa that offers a variety of soothing treatments. location: prinsengracht 587 [centrum].
