june browne newton was married to one of the planet's iconic photographers, but she became a sought after photographer in her own right under the pseudonym alice springs. opening on sat - feb 18 [3pm-8pm] at galleria carla sozzani - the art space of the 10 corso como store - is people, an interesting retrospective that for the first time provides a comprehensive look at the four decades that span her work, featuring photographs from advertising and fashion as well as nudes and portraits. interestingly, her own photographic oeuvre began with a bout of influenza suffered by helmut hewton. june had her husband show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in his place photographed an advertisement for french cigarette brand gitanes. over the years she received many commissions for portraits, some of which have become iconic, and the variety of artists, actors and musicians she has immortalized reads like a who’s who of the international cultural scene [on through feb 22 only!]. location: corso como 10 [porta garibaldi].
